Natural landscape near QEP Resources environmentally friendly oil drilling.

QEP recognizes that prevention of spills is vital to protection of water, land resources and wildlife. We design, construct, and operate our facilities in a manner that reduces the potential for spills, and we have procedures in place to quickly respond in order to minimize impacts to the environment from releases or spills that may occur. QEP also has procedures to remediate potential spills.

  • We design and construct our production facilities to minimize the potential for releases of oil and produced water. Spill prevention measures include: equalizing lines between tanks to prevent overfill, automated tank level monitoring, high-level alarms and remote shut-in capability. Production equipment and storage vessels have capacities that are sufficient for predicted volumes and are constructed of materials compatible with produced liquids at anticipated temperatures and pressures.
  • We construct new facilities with Lease Automatic Custody Transfer (LACT) units for transfer of oil and natural gas liquids into pipelines. This reduces the risk for tank overflows and spills associated with truck loading. It also reduces truck traffic and its associated safety risk.
  • QEP designs our facilities to include secondary containment structures for produced liquid storage vessels. Secondary containment structures consist of corrugated steel walls with liners to prevent impact to surface and groundwater resources.
  • Each of our operating areas has prepared and implemented Spill Prevention, Control, and Countermeasure (SPCC) Plans. In addition to the aforementioned measures, the SPCC Plans describe procedures for personnel training, inspection, maintenance and release response.
